Hunt for the Great Spotted Kiwi

We were keen to find this, most difficult of iconic Aotearoa birds. Leaving after dark we wound our way up a remote West Coast track along the Bullock Creek. Crossing a bridge and going to the start of the Cave Creek Track we heard the bird. Later, whilst sitting in the dark there was a gentle rustle close to us. But it didn’t emerge. After a while we gave up but there will be another day.
