- The call-up from a friend came. Next thing I was in the plane to San Jose. From hotel verandah and out over the gardens, first bird was a Blue-gray Tanager not 10 feet from me. Next was a Blue-crowned Motmot. And so on….a kaleidoscope of coloured birds. Later came the mammals and reptiles. The feared Fer de lance snake; surrounded on a track by “crime scene tape”. Its baleful, hooded eyes sent chills down the spine. The guide was an all right sort who talked non stop in a curious accent that made me switch off. The car was an OK mid sized Japanese but kept stalling when we slowed down over pot holes, or came to lights We visited Arenal Volcano,Monte verde etc. Saw most of what we hoped. The crazy 3 wattled bell bird with a song like a worn out Klaxon and of course the Resplendent Quetzal. And of course both two-toed and three-toed sloths.
It was a good trip. The rain was something again but hey, we went in the rainy season. DM me if you want more detail.
